The Scottish Government is consulting on Cremation Regulations as part of the Burial and Cremation Act (Scotland) 2016.
The purpose of the consultation is to seek views on draft regulations which have been informed by stakeholder working groups, with which the NAFD has been involved, more general stakeholder engagement and the findings of the Inspector of Crematoria. NAFD members based in Scotland, or with an interest in cremation in Scotland, are urged to respond to the consultation.
The law on cremation is currently set out in the Cremation Act 1902 and various regulations. Once the 2016 Act is fully implemented the 1902 Act will no longer have effect in Scotland. The main regulations are the Cremation (Scotland) Regulations 1935 which have been amended by various other sets of subsequent regulations.
The documents, including the consultation paper and associated Annexes – have been posted below and members are urged to read them over and respond as appropriate. Please do contact your local Area Federation chairman with any comments or queries. NAFD Scotland will also submit a response to the consultation.
The closing date for responses is Friday 9 June 2017.
Please email your response to BurialandCremation@gov.scot.
Responses can also be sent in writing to the Burial and Cremation Legislation Team, Area 3 East, St Andrew’s House, Regent Road, Edinburgh, EH1 3DG.
