NAFD hosts Certification of Death roadshows across Scotland

The new Certification of Death (Scotland) legislation is due to be enacted on 13 May 2015.

calendarThe Association is aware that some funeral directors are uncertain of the implications of the Act and may have questions regarding procedures and practical issues. We have a strong working relationship with the Scottish Government and have offered to host a series of roadshows, on their behalf, which will visit many parts of Scotland to explain the new law and how it will affect funeral directors and arrangers.

The meetings will be chaired by Graeme Brown, who has served on various Governmental committees starting from the original Review of Burial & Cremation, and is now a member of the National Advisory Group. He is also a founder member of the Scottish Cross Party Funerals and Bereavement Group at Holyrood.  Prior to his retirement, he had over thirty years experience of funeral directing.

There will be a drop-in session from 2:00pm – 5:00pm each day and a more formal meeting at 5:30pm when there will be a short presentation on behalf of the Scottish Government, followed by a contribution from a Registrar and also from Graeme Brown on behalf of the funeral profession. There will then be time for questions and discussion. It is intended that proceedings should finish at 7:30pm. Light refreshments will be available.

Who should attend?

These meetings are not only for business proprietors but for all funeral arrangers and those who supply the public with information regarding certification or registration procedures. We also welcome those interested individuals from other kindred professions including Registrars, medical staff, clergy and cemetery and crematoria staff.

The meeting at each roadshow, at 5:30pm, is the main focus of each event. However, we are aware that not everybody will be available to attend.  The afternoon drop-ins, therefore, are available for discussion, questions and clarification on an informal basis. If there is sufficient interest, we may even be able to conduct smaller group seminars, but would require advance notice. It is not possible for the roadshows to visit individual companies and so these would be venue-based.

This is the first major change in Scottish certification and registration for some considerable time. It is vitally important that we all speak with the same voice in helping those that matter most to us, our bereaved clients.
